Why Kamala Lost in 2024

She should have paid attention to the millions of Make America Healthy Again voters.

Isn’t it fascinating how Donald J. Trump used current and former Democrats to win in 2024? In particular, his decision to bring Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democrat from a storied family, into his coalition brought over tens of millions of natural health enthusiasts and anti-vaxxers who seek leadership in this area as they look towards a new democratic future, which, to them, means taking on Big Pharma and cleaning up our foods and consumer products from chemical toxins. This is the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) voter. You can be against chemical toxins and for the orange man.

I talk to MAHA voters all of the time. They are voters who went for the orange candidate and may well have gone with Kamala Harris if she had dared to talk with Kennedy and embrace those viewpoints of his that truly are filled with wisdom about what it means to be healthy in America today in 2024 when we consumers are battling pollution, food dyes, endocrine -disrupting chemicals (EDCs), big pharma, and big government in one contradictory mess. She should have condemned MSNBC and the liberal media for being so blind to those few times when Kennedy had a good idea or two. She should have told Kennedy, “You’re a Democrat. I’m a Democrat. I want you to swear allegiance to the Democratic Party and work for us and cut out a lot of your bull, and I’ll give you something at the end of it all. But you’ve got to endorse me. You’ve got to stay with the party. You can advise me on the environment and certain aspects of health.” She should have done what other winning Democrats have done. President Bill Clinton enjoyed his Sister Souljah moment: he triangulated and took on his own party to bring in more conservatives. She should have taken Kennedy into her coalition.

Given the small margins in each battleground state and the millions of voters I’m talking about among the MAHA bloc, here are the reasons taking Kennedy into the orange man’s coalition tipped the election in his favor:

1) Kennedy represents tens of millions of natural health enthusiasts and zealots.

2) He espouses strong anti-vax viewpoints that MAHA readily takes up. (Harris could have condemned these.)

3) He is well regarded for his environmental views, especially his powerful book Crimes Against Nature, published during the George W. Bush administration; at the time, he was against corporate fascism taking over the government (now he’s part of the gold rush).

4) He is thought of as anti-big government.

5) And certainly against Big Pharma.

If Vice President Kamala Harris had risked meeting with Kennedy or giving him some limited advisory role, Trump would never have gotten him, and she would have appealed to these voters. After all, winning in politics is about addition, not subtraction. Trump was smart, and Kamala was not.

But she didn’t take that risk for fear of being canceled by her supporters, who would become indignant enough to attack their candidate instead of understanding that she was assembling a larger winning coalition. Her supporters would never have gotten it. The media needed to be smart enough to pivot, and it did not.

The media didn’t help. Kennedy has made headlines with misguided conclusions. The headlines said Kennedy wants an outright ban on fluoride in public drinking water. MSNBC made it sound like fluoridation of water supplies is essential to public health in 2024. But it isn’t. I have covered this controversy extensively, and we have less need for fluoridated water supplies than in the 1940s when it began. Back then, very few kids used fluoride toothpaste. However, as fluoride toothpaste use has grown, the need for mass fluoridation has decreased.

What’s more, studies have shown that fluoride is now found at high enough levels in some public drinking water supplies to cause neurological damage to children. In past years, it was being used at levels that were causing mass dental fluorosis, and allowable concentrations needed to be tightened. Using xylitol has also been shown to perform equally well, if not better, than fluoride and would probably result in greater public health benefits with fewer risks. We know this thanks to maverick doctors like Lon Jones, D.O., whose books on xylitol have shown a healthy way past fluoride, and the company he founded, Xlear, has advanced the science and made such products available in the marketplace. Total support for fluoride is misguided.

Several million people are at risk in the US because of these high levels. No one believed the liberal media because it was misinformed and taking a meat cleaver approach to a subject it should have discussed and dissected with a much finer instrument.

The liberal media was misinformed. Everybody on MSNBC took the same line: fluoride everywhere is good; fluoride bans are bad. There was no attempt to understand the topic. Fluoride is less needed today, and its use ties into corporate interests that are overly influential on the dental association. I was screaming, knowing the topic, at MSNBC and saying, “Give me some truth,” when its anchors and reporters took such a black-and-white position, knowing, as I did, that Americans are smarter than that. It was nuanced, but they caved into corporate interests rather than understanding that prevention is important and that some forms of “alternative medicine” are actually superior.

Once again, a third-party candidate determined this election. Kennedy represents a number of misguided public policies. There is vaccination overload, but many of the most basic ones that we have used for half a century have provided benefits with little risk. Most of us grew up free from polio, pertussis, mumps, and whooping cough.

Vaccinations containing mercury are considered bad medicine. But thimerosal is not used any longer.

On the other hand, big pharma seems to want to sell us a new one every day. Certainly, our governmental officials have sided with big pharma.

The sad thing is that, environmentally, Trump is going to kill us. The Democrats weren’t great. But they were on the right side, though way too slow, timid, and willing to cave into the first state’s right or corporate legal challenge. But Trump will be deadly to my friends in Cancer Alley. They don’t stand a chance.

Better to keep your enemies close, hey, Kamala?
