The Big Rally In Baton Rouge
Today is the big rally at the state capitol here in Baton Rouge.
Environmental, climate justice, and civil rights groups across Louisiana will meet there to raise awareness about our future.
Louisiana is home to climate denial. Yet at the same time, I’ve been down to Houma and the formerly 32,000-acre Isle de Jean Charles. It is now about 320 acres.
I have been to Thibodaux and witnessed the saltwater intrusion coming up Bayou Lafourche.
Louisiana is the petrochemical powerhouse of America.
But it is also Ground Zero for the survival of the planet.
The same chemicals accelerating global warming are harming so many people down here. The drinking water at the kids’ schools contains atrazine, which interferes with their sex hormones. It is so unfair.
Now Formosa, an Asian industrial conglomerate known worldwide for pollution, wants to build the world’s largest plastic plant in America in Cancer Alley.
The rally aims to stop this corporate colonialism.
The plant will be the penultimate step towards the genocide of my friends here. The goal, though unspoken, is to displace them and acquire their land or buy it at reduced prices while they’re living. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is intent on this genocide because of his insensitivity, a white supremacy that dates to 1811 and the nation’s largest slave rebellion that took place there in Cancer Alley.
This disregard for Cancer Alley is a modern form of environmental racism and years for justice. All the bad plants are placed in Black communities. The situation is as clear as day here.
I hope you join us in your own person life. It’s in time like this when truth is a rare commodity and the personal becomes political.
Buy less plastic.
Reduce demand.
Be part of the righteous and virtuous cause.
