Have You Had That Talk—When Is It Time For Your Kids To Disconnect?
Have you had that talk yet with your kids? I mean the one about their smartphones.
Devra Davis, Ph.D., M.P.H., president of the Environmental Health Trust, a nonprofit group based in Jackson, Wyoming, has authored Disconnect, which explores the risks of 5G and cell phones. In her book, Dr. Davis has sounded the warnings on cell phone radiation and offers these safe-use guidelines that apply to our children as well as ourselves:
Make sure your kids use wired anti-radiation headphones and are texting instead of taking calls. Anti-radiation headphones are designed to minimize electromagnetic field radiation; texting involves much less exposure, too.
Kids shouldn’t put the phone up against the side of their skull or in their pockets—except when on airplane mode. If they don’t have headphones, they should use the speaker as far away from their body as possible.
Tell your kids if they place their phone on their lap, use a barrier like a book or pillow to increase the distance between their body and the device and reduce exposure
All of us should keep cell and wireless phones away from babies, infants, toddlers, and other kids and adults.
Children should never sleep with their phones. (Check to make sure the phone is nowhere near your child’s head when they go to sleep at night.) They should turn it off or put it into airplane mode.
Don’t let your child carry their phone in their pocket or against their body when it’s turned on. Males who use cell phones the most have the least sperm and worse quality compared to those with less radiation exposure. Instead, kids should turn off their phones or place in airplane mode and keep them in their backpack or locker.
Keep the back of the phone, where the antenna is located, facing away from the body.
Kids should use their phone when and where the signal is good. In marginal areas, their phone requires greater power output so they are exposed to more radiation.
Finally, pregnant women should keep cell and wireless phones away from their abdomen. Mothers who use mobile phones the most during pregnancy are likely to have shorter gestation periods and more miscarriages.
