Breast Cancer By the Bottle
Is there an ethylene oxide plant in my neighborhood? Ethylene oxide is one of the most carcinogenic substances ever studied. Type “EPA Ethylene Oxide Information Page” into a search engine to visit their detailed listing of local facilities. It is a rip-roaring carcinogen, and it causes high rates of breast cancer among nurses and hospital personnel who are exposed to its fumes when sterilizing medical tools.
Most people buying shampoo, especially parents, don’t connect their purchase with their own or child’s risk of cancer through the use of the product or from inhaling the local air.
Baby shampoos with “eth” ingredients should be avoided to protect children everywhere
One of the commonest uses of ethylene oxide is to make detergents for bubble baths, shampoos, and laundry. Any ingredient on a product label that says “eth.” This means it was ethoyxlated, very likely, and most probably, by ethylene oxide. Also suspect are polyethylene glycol compounds. Most go by the acronym “PEG,” which is another way dangerous carcinogens are hidden from shoppers. The ethylene oxide is broken down into another diethylene oxide or dioxane, which causes male breast cancer. Small amounts of this chemical remain in many finished products.
I successfully sued as a citizen enforcer Procter & Gamble for having high amounts of dioxane in their Herbal Essences and Pantene shampoos and won a consent judgement that led to their reduction by about 90 percent. At the time, that was a huge legal and health victory, and many companies also took care to significantly reduce their levels with some proclaiming that their products were tested to be dioxane free. They still used the ethoxylated alcohols, though. So if you buy from a company that claims to be dioxane free but still uses any of the “eth” ingredients, you may be nontoxic but not antitoxic. Your choice is hurting other people. Really.
An antitoxic choice is to choose brands that come from people who have a compact with their patrons and local communities to produce clean products. The only true victory will come from zero tolerance.
In a survey released in 2022, the EPA announced locations of some twenty-three sterilizer facilities that pose a high local cancer risk. Being informed is the first step in self-protection. Do you live in one of these towns?
Do you live in one of these areas or know persons whom you love who and buy shampoos with “eth” ingredients? Then you might be investing in your own cancer of your friend’s disease from what you pay for to put on your skin or inhale in the local air. It doesn’t need to be this way. It’s so easy to escape this trap.
Here are the worst of the worst locations:
Lakewood, Colorado
Groveland, Florida
Taunton, Massachusetts
Hanover, Jessup, and Salisbury, Maryland
Jackson, Missouri
Columbus, Nebraska
Franklin and Linden, New Jersey
Ardmore, Oklahoma
Erie and Zelienpole, Pennsylvania
Añasco, Fajardo, Salinas, and Villalba, Puerto Rico
New Tazewell and Memphis, Tennessee
Athens and Laredo, Texas
Sandy, Utah
Richmond, Virginia
Zero tolerance when it comes to reproductive toxins and cancer is the only way to go any longer. The self-protection methods, detailed in Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children From Hidden Chemical Toxins, will be vital to your family health.
